Juniper Management
200 Treated Juniper Acres in conjunction with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department
Some lower elevation areas are being taken over by the Juniper. Although the juniper can be a pleasing tree that creates a unique landscape, when left unchecked they will snuff out plant diversity. Plant diversity not only looks pleasant, but it also ensures species diversity. For example, one of the largest drawbacks to Juniper encroachment is the elimination of critical forage for wintering big game, especially deer and elk. Common treatments for juniper encroachment include mastication or lop and scatter. In same cases where the junipers are dry and fire danger is low (usually early fall with first snows), individual trees are set ablaze.
